Normally basic perception is likely to oscillate due to emotions. This oscillation is only temporary and will come back in due course. When image audit is conducted during this situation, when there is an oscillation of basic perception, the output may not reveal the realistic situation. We need to wait for the time, when the target audience is not affected by emotions. For an example, if an employee gets a cash reward from the management, on that day, he would perceive the management better due to emotions. Another person, who is not getting the reward may rate poorly. These phenomena are only temporary and they will be back to normalcy after a week or so.</span></div>

During 2003, when the employees went on strike demanding wage revision, the Government dismissed enmasse around two lakh employees. Besides thousands of employees were arrested and imprisoned.</span></div>

The Government subsequently reinstated all the dismissed employees withdrew all the police cases. Though the Government cancelled all its earlier orders, an inexplicable tension prevails between the Government and the employees. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Under these circumstances, Public Services International (PSI) retained Prime Point Foundation to conduct an Image Audit of the Government employees to study their present mindset. The objective of the study was to bridge the gap between the Government and the employees.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Prime Point Team, developed a questionnaire which was administered to the Government employees in four districts Cuddalore, Vellore, Tiruchy and Chennai. The respondents were asked to fill in the questionnaire with their tick mark and drop in a box provided for. They were asked not to reveal their identity.</span></div>

The reaction of the Government is also included in this report.</span></div>

For this purpose, the services of PR professionals are made use of. </span></div>

Often in our personal lives, the mirror tells us what any human close to us failed to tell us, including the fact that our fly is open.</span></div>

In the sale transactions, an amount was paid towards ‘goodwill’. In assessing a society by country’s growth, economists have developed the concept of ‘social capital’ built. It is not just the sum total of numerous development indices, but the capacity of a community of citizens to actively participate in a democratic discourse.</span></div>

It is because we don’t relate such terms and concepts to our own language and traditions. If I utter the same words in our language, I am sure all of you here would say "oh! I know it. We are addressing the cerebral world as well as the inter world. Adi Shankara cautions the human against the deceptive reality – a rope being mistaken for a snake. It is sagely caution in Business.</span></div>

Every Organisation sets goals, assembles resources from a variety of sources, uses such resources to achieve the goal. Often the goals set define the ‘Image" and there is a self-perception of what you think you are. That is ‘ Bimba’. While interacting with the environment, the organisation transmits or communicates the goals along with the image.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Image as perceived by others is a complex mixture of the organisation’s interactions. Its competitors interactions, expectations of the ‘I’s in the circle, Image is Corporate Identity ‘plus’. In marketing and advertising, we often use the word ‘Brand Equity’. Again, I would stress that ‘Image’ is something more than this "Branch equity’.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Experts call this as the ‘PERCEPTUAL ASSETS’ which affect business results. Personality, I feel it is somewhat constricted view of the Assets, a typical financial auditors view.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Now comes the question of how to audit the Perceptual Assets or liabilities for drawing up a MIS – oriented balance sheet. The typical auditor’s report concentrates on the financial results, the ‘dividend’ to the shareholders. Over centuries auditors have developed Matrices, the result of their endeavour is like an ‘autopsy’, a post-event examination. On the other hand, Audit of ‘Perceptual Assets’ is like an internal Financial Advisors or Company Secretary’s monthly or quarterly ‘Memo’. We loosely understand them in our profession as ‘Feed-back’.</span></div>

You may even arrange a TV sound-bite. You are anxious to ensure publication or broadcast. You have created a self-image at that very moment. How many of us think beyond that day/ While sending the clippings to the top executive, how many of us make a note of what he told the TV or the Press? Is the person compared to his predecessor? to his peers in the profession? How many of us advise him before he gives the sound-bite?</span></div>

Each of them have perceptual framework of values, needs, performance. Management experts are emphasising that a business that looks to the future will spend more resources to get the information from outside the organisation than from within. ‘Listening’ Organisations that change their perceptions while attempting to manage their perceptual assets will prosper. Meanings are in people. The content of your message and what is perceived out of that are with relevant to today’s world of communication, the way people receive their information is changing. The other factor is have we learnt to break through the sound-barrier, which is more than information dissemination.</span></div>

After identifying the target group, then the Management should finalise the areas where they would like to have the feedback. This is very essential because, the Image Audit would focus on selective areas. For example, if the employees are the target audience, the Management can focus on the handling of grievances, treatment given to them, etc. If the target group is customers, then customer satisfaction, availability of products to them, how the counter staff behaves with them, etc. can be taken for study.</span></div>

A fundamental avocation of yester-year, the trade unionism has become irrelevant and unionists jobless in the post-liberalisation era. The ostensible objective of this endeavour is to discover what its members think about the organisation, its leaders and the like. Not surprisingly, many have suggested regular interactions between the leaders and the cadres. The central leadership appears to have passed the muster vis-a-vis handling collective problems.But the management of micro grievances by the top leadership has come under flak. What has come out loud and clear through this audit is that the CBOO leadership must beef up communication by employing modern tools.</span></div>

Often at times I felt the need to conduct image audits for my clients before planning out any strategy for them or before the annual review to see how our PR campaigns have fared. Maybe I might be working with Mr. Srinivasan soon for my clients. Anyway back to the topic, what exactly is Image audit and how it is conducted? I asked Mr. Srinivasan and he explained:</span></div>

For example, an employee has several hidden perception on their employer company or management and he does not want to reveal for his own reasons.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">How do you get to know what other people are feeling about you? Normally everybody tend to be frank and honest for revealing their mind when (1) they are in group and (2) they are asked to reveal anonymously.</span></div>

We design a questionnaire to suit the situation and test audit with few target sample. After finalising the questionnaire, we administer the questionnaire to the audience after assembling them together. Then we make them respond without indicating their identity. All the response sheets are pooled through a ballot box. In this process, we have found near 100 percent accuracy.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">When I conducted an image audit for a software company, it was found that a section of employees in a city was dissatisfied. The problem was traced to a communication gap between the management and the staff. The issue was sorted out before it blew up into a major HR issue.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In the case of a nationalised bank that was undergoing a crisis, we came across customer and employee opinions that were quite opposite to what the top management had in its mind about the two stakeholders. The bank management thought that while the customers had lost faith in the bank, the employees were confident that the bank would sail through the rough weather.</span></div>

There was no run on the bank. On the other hand, employees expressed their fear about the bank's future. Following our report, the bank management took immediate steps to enhance their internal communication and motivate their employees.</span></div>

Then a detailed questionnaire is prepared. This questionnaire is first tested on a small target audience. This is done to know whether the questions are clear and whether any corrections are to be made. Then the real survey is done. Keeping the identity of respondents secret is the crucial aspect of such surveys so that we get frank responses. When an outside agency does a survey, the respondents feel confident and secure to express their views.</span></div>

After successfully handling Corporation Bank's initial public offering (IPO) in 1997, Srinivasan retired voluntarily from the bank to promote Prime Point PR. The management might think this is attributable to unattractive wages and keep on increasing its wage bill as a remedy. But this would only raise costs without yielding results, if the roots of dissatisfaction lie in other factors like lack of faith in the fairness of decision-makers in the company, or lack of awareness of the business goals or long- term vision of the company among the employees. </span></div>
